The Nova Scotia Housing and Homelessness Network hosted its first annual conference in Halifax on November 22-23, 2011. For this historic event, 140 enthusiastic participants from all sectors came together and explored how to grow the newly founded provincial Network from its infancy to an effective organization; one that has the ability to achieve its set goals of ending homelessness and strengthening the affordable housing sector in Nova Scotia. Participants left with a sense of optimism that through collaboration and proper planning things can get better for the homeless and housing sector in NS.
The two days were an incredible opportunity to combine our collective skill, creativity and determination and achieve results that none of us could have reached alone. Participants commented that there were many new faces in the room, and realized the benefit of building relationships with all players.
Delegates collaborated in Open Space Forums on how a provincial network can best support us in collectively and individually moving towards our vision. Videos: 'World Café | Pro-Active Café
Tim Richter (video) delivered an inspirational keynote on the success of the Calgary Homeless Foundation’s 10 year Plan to End Homelessness. He provided valuable insights that guided a discussion on how a similar process might look in Nova Scotia.
At a public forum titled, “Community Building with a Conscience: Toronto’s Regent Park Revitalization”, the audience learned from Tom Dutton and Martin Blake from The Daniels Corporation what a successful community development looks like.
The outcome of the gathering will guide the work of the Network Steering Committee over the next couple of months and will bring us closer to a strategy that sets out to end homelessness and foster a strong affordable housing sector in Nova Scotia.
The conference was generously supported by CMHC, The Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association, Graybar Canada | Harris & Roome, Killam Properties Inc., Shelter Nova Scotia, Spring Garden Area Business Association, and Investment Property Owners Association of Nova Scotia.
